A Summer Affair: Falling in Love with Italy
From tips and tricks to fun in the sun, there's a little of everything in this week's issue, and it's all for you.
Every so often, I get this feeling of total clarity, and for a brief moment, I forget that I actually live in Italy. I almost fear that it is just a dream and that I will wake up in my old house in the burbs.
But I don’t.
Instead, I wake up to the sun-scorched, red-tiled rooftops and the revving of Vespa zooming down the street.
And I smile.
I know I’m lucky that my dad was a Brit and passed his citizenship onto me, making the transfer to Italy easier. And, I’m fortunate to have a husband and family that support and encourage my crazy ideas. But most of all I am grateful for the opportunities and growth that Italy has allowed me to have - to let me become the best version of myself.
What I have learned is that when you change your situation, take risks, and push yourself to go just a little further toward your goal, even when it feels like the walls are too high, you will grow and evolve.
Moving to Italy isn’t just an action, it is a shift in mindset. Your view of yourself, and how you fit into the world, will be forever changed.
Moving to Italy is a challenge, regardless of your citizenship, financial situation, or support system, and the task will test you every step of the way. But in the end, when you are waking up to the bright sunshine, and zooming Vespa, you too will smile and know that today, has granted you another day in your new life in Italy.
How to Beat the Italian Heat This Summer
I truly can’t believe it’s already July. Even though summer officially began on June 21st, here in Italy, in my mind, the season began much earlier. Once we turn on the AC and need a daily Affogato (ice cream and espresso), it’s summer to me.
This isn’t my first summer here in Italy, but if it’s yours, there are a few things that you should know. Whether you’re vacationing or have already made the move, there are some amazing and not-so-amazing things to keep in mind during this time of year.
My Summer Bucket List 🌞
Every season I try to make a to-do list that doesn’t involve my desk and computer! Then, we try to tick off as many as we can. No matter how big or small your wish list is, make sure to get out there and try new things. Tell me what yours is this summer?
The phrase “Il dolce far niente,” (the sweetness of doing nothing) definitely came to mind while putting this together.
Photograph the Italian Riviera 😍
Try the limoncello spritz 🍋 at New Bridge Pizza. (say Ciao to Enzo for me!)
Visit a Blue Flag beach 🏖️
Try a water-sport 😅 (or maybe not)
Make Gelato from scratch 🍦
Get my boat license ⛵ Sardinia here we come!
Catch as many sunsets from a rooftop bar 🌇 as possible.
Attend a festival (art, food, culture, music… you name it!!) 🎭
If you’re not sure where to start to begin your move to Italy, that’s OK!
We all have to start somewhere 💗 and with so much information available, we’ll get you off on the right foot in no time. Whether you’re interested in settling down part time, full time, or for a lifetime, there’s something new to learn… or unlearn.
Our annual How to Move to Italy Bootcamp could be just what you need. It’s FREE and you don’t need to worry about your schedule. It’s great to attend the live sessions, but they’re also accessible afterwards for a limited time. Soon you’ll have clarity on what it costs to live in Italy, how to find your perfect place, and all-things visas, citizenship, and residency.
We just updated the site so you can head over for more details, FAQs, and of course to reserve your spot for the 12th, 13th, and 14th, of this September. These next two months of fun in the sun are sure to fly by. But don’t worry, we’ll send reminders as the dates start approaching ✅.
Oh! Make sure to scroll down past the RSVP section to see the bonus we’ve put together for live attendees. I’m extra excited for this one and know it’ll help jump start your journey.
Location Spotlight: Versatile Vicenza
This charming town was suggested by someone in one of our Facebook groups. Located in the northeast region of Veneto, Vicenza is just a 50-minute train ride away from Venice.
And in under half an hour, you can also reach the romantic city of Verona, by train, with its rich history and Romeo and Juliet sites. The captivating city of Padua, famous for its ancient university and magnificent basilica, is also near.
With its close proximity to these famous cities, it serves as an ideal base for exploration. But don't be mistaken, Vicenza is far from being in the shadow of its more renowned neighbors. This delightful town offers plenty on its own.
Vicenza is renowned for its magnificent architecture, with its historic center designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you wander through the narrow streets, you'll be captivated by the interesting blend of Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque buildings. The most prominent figure in Vicenza's architectural landscape is the legendary Andrea Palladio. His masterpieces, such as the awe-inspiring Palladian Basilica and the iconic Villa Almerico Capra, known as "La Rotonda," transport you back in time.
Exploring Vicenza is like stepping into a living museum, but it's not just a destination for history enthusiasts. The town offers a vibrant cultural scene with art exhibitions, music festivals, and theater performances. Immerse yourself in the local culture by attending a traditional Italian opera or exploring the Vicenza Civic Art Gallery, which houses an impressive collection of artwork.
Living here is a dream come true for those seeking an authentic Italian lifestyle. The town's welcoming atmosphere, close-knit community, and slower pace of life create a sense of belonging. You can take part in leisurely walks through the bustling Piazza dei Signori, enjoy a coffee at a local café, or browse the vibrant markets filled with fresh produce.
No visit to Vicenza is complete without savoring the local cuisine. Prepare your taste buds for a culinary adventure as you indulge in regional specialties such as baccalà alla vicentina, a delicious dish made from salted codfish. Pair it with a glass of Prosecco or Soave, both typical in the Veneto region.
As for the landscape, Vicenza is surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and picturesque countryside. Nature enthusiasts will delight in exploring the nearby Berici Hills, offering panoramic views and hiking trails. For a change of scenery, Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake, is just a short drive away. Here, you can relax on the shores, try some water sports, or explore the characteristic lakeside towns.
Vicenza is best suited for those seeking an authentic Italian experience away from the tourist crowds. It's perfect for art and architecture lovers, history enthusiasts, and those who appreciate a laid-back lifestyle. The town's warm hospitality, rich cultural heritage, and stunning architecture make it an irresistible destination for both visitors and those looking to settle down.
So, pack your bags, immerse yourself in the beauty of Vicenza, and get ready to create unforgettable memories in this charming Italian town.

Dear Samantha: If I become a Dual Italian / American, do I need to pay tax in Italy? I only plan on being in Italy a few months a year.
Dear Deb: The good news is, obtaining Italian citizenship doesn’t require you to pay taxes unless you become an official taxable resident of Italy. This means that you either have registered at the local town hall as a resident, or you live more than half of the year in Italy + moved the centre of your life here.
If you only visit a few months a year, and do not earn any income in Italy, you are not obligated to report any income tax in Italy.
The Inside Track …
Citizenship
It’s no secret it’s gotten harder and harder getting an appointment at an Italian consulate, especially in the U.S.! I won’t name names, but certain citizenship clients know which cities I’m referring to. There are some that won’t even let you join a wait list. There is a reason, of course, as many consulates are still catching up from delays during the pandemic.
But, if you just can’t wait any longer, you might qualify for the No Appointment Case. To read more, click here, and see if you qualify!
Property
When our clients Olga and Craig sent in their testimonial — it made my day! Ilaria, one of our architecture and property specialists, had the pleasure of assisting them, and we really couldn’t be happier knowing that they’re getting to live their dreams.
Here, have a quick read below. We could all use a bit of inspiration, right?! And congrats again Olga and Craig, or as we say here in Italy, tanti auguri! 🥳
From suburban Melbourne in Australia to the historic centre of one of the most beautiful villages in Abruzzo, Smart Move Italy (SMI) was the key to us fulfilling our dream of buying a home in Italy.
Searching the internet made it easy for us to find homes for sale all over Italy, but that was as far as we could go. Despite numerous attempts we could not progress, or in many cases even start to engage with the local property agents. Finding SMI was our turning point. Our representative Ilaria could succeed where we could not. Engaging with local property agents, organizing video tours of prospective properties and providing advice and guidance enabled us to move forward. Then when we had found the home we wanted SMI organized the building inspection and our legal representation. Throughout this process Ilaria was always available to answer any questions or address any concerns we had.
Now, two months on from our arrival in Italy we are living in our home and settling into our new lives here. We had read many accounts of people who having moved to Italy encountered friendly, welcoming locals and that has certainly been our experience. There is a fascination that we have come from Australia, to Abruzzo and a genuine joy at seeing people moving into the town. We can honestly say that our dream of retiring in Italy has exceeded our expectations and we know that SMI made this possible.

Planning to Retire to Italy?
I was in Puglia last week to film an eposode of the BBC World Travel Show (we’ll share air time soon) and talk about what it is like to live in Puglia, and take advantage of some of the amazing incentives some towns are offering. We spoke about many things, including the 7% flat tax that many of our retiree’s take advantage of.
I ate way too much, got a little bit sun burnt, and fell in love again, with this magical part of the country. 🌴 I posted more stories and drool-worthy reels over on Insta. Make sure you follow.
Speaking of vacationing, I’ve been SO happy seeing the new member requests, feedback, and stories, in our Facebook group “Retire in Italy”. You can click here to request to join… I like to think of this group as a virtual piazza, square.
Our team loves hearing from you and seeing how everyone lives la dolce vita in their own way. And of course, sharing how you’re making it here, to this bel paese 🇮🇹.
We’re of course here to lend a helping hand, providing expert advice as much as we can, and offering services to anyone wanting to take that next step.
Ci sentiamo presto, we’ll talk soon. Until then, keep brainstorming and dreaming of your ideal future that we truly believe is in reach. From sun-drenched piazzas to gelato-filled chats and warm hospitality, let’s continue sharing advice and experiences to get closer and closer to a new life in Italy ✨.
