Is Bobbo Natale Buried in Italy? 🎅
Did you know….there is a peculiar Christmas legend rooted in a southern Italian seaside town that says Santa Claus (Bobbo Natale in Italy) is buried in Puglia? A recent CNN article explored this possibility and Saint Nicolas’s feast day on 6 December ushers in the Christmas season each year in Bari, so perhaps there is truth to this tale.
The ancient port town of Bari is home to the Basilica di San Nicola, where you’ll find the relics of St. Nicholas, a Christian saint known for his generosity and gift-giving. Over the centuries, St. Nicholas evolved into the modern-day figure of Santa Claus, and the connection with Bari is now part of local lore.
The legend goes that Italian sailors from Bari traveled to the region of Myra (modern-day Turkey) in the 11th century to rescue the remains of St. Nicholas from the Muslim-controlled area. Bringing the relics home, the town proudly claims to be the final resting place of the beloved gift-bringer.
During the holiday season, visitors from all over the world make a pilgrimage of sorts to the Basilica di San Nicola to pay homage to the saint and, in a way, the spirit of giving that Santa Claus embodies. The tale of Santa Claus being buried in Bari may be more symbolic than factual, but it adds an Italian twist to the big guy’s legendary reputation.
Italian Movies to Enjoy During Holiday Break 🎬
As the holiday season hits its peak, downtime comes at a premium, but we all need a little break. What better way to unwind than by immersing yourself in the magic of classic Italian cinema? Whether you're a cinephile (yep…it’s a thing) or simply looking for a cozy movie night, you won’t regret taking time to enjoy these timeless cinematic treasures. So, grab some popcorn, settle in, and let the magic of Italian cinema unfold before you.
The options are endless but here are four must-watch classics to get you started:
La Dolce Vita (1960): Federico Fellini's iconic film explores the glittering yet tumultuous world of 1960s Rome. Featuring Marcello Mastroianni as a disillusioned journalist navigating a decadent society, this film is often considered the cornerstone of Italian cinema.
Cinema Paradiso (1988): Giuseppe Tornatore's ode to the magic of cinema takes us on a nostalgic trip to a war-torn Sicilian village. The story focuses on a young boy's friendship with a local projectionist who instills within him a passion for filmmaking.
The Bicycle Thief (1948): Directed by Vittorio De Sica, this renowned masterpiece is a poignant exploration of post-war Italy. The film follows a father and son on a desperate quest to recover a stolen bicycle, unraveling stories of resilience, poverty, and morality.
Big Night (1996): Directed by Stanley Tucci and Campbell Scott, "Big Night" is a culinary masterpiece that follows two Italian brothers running a struggling restaurant in America. You will laugh, cry, and laugh again, especially if you’re part of an Italian immigrant family.

Fun in Florence for the Past 100 Years 🧸🎲🚂🎠🎨✨🎁
In the heart of Florence, where art, history, and culture converge, you’ll find a magical shop that transcends time and captivates the imagination of both young and old—Dreoni Toys. Tucked away in the city center since 1923, Dreoni Toys stands as a testament to the enchanting spirit of childhood, inviting visitors to experience a world of wonder.
Our Chief Dream Maker, Samantha Wilson, recently shared her love for Dreoni Toys on A New Life in Italy’s Instagram account (you can follow here):
The holidays, in particular, cast a special glow upon this special shop. The store transforms into a festive retreat adorned with twinkling lights, vibrant decorations, and the unmistakable scent of holiday cheer. The spirit of giving and the joy of discovery come alive in every corner, making it the perfect destination for families and toy enthusiasts alike.
For those seeking unique and thoughtful gifts, Dreoni offers everything from traditional Italian toys to international favorites. Each item carries with it a sense of craftsmanship and nostalgia, making it a meaningful present for loved ones during the holiday season.
Beyond the tangible treasures, Dreoni provides an immersive experience that transcends the act of shopping. It's a place where memories are made, and the joy of childhood is celebrated in its purest form. If a toy store can maintain an iconic presence in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities for 100 years, it must be a good one. Don’t you agree?
Vin Brulè - Mulled Wine, Italian-Style 🍷🔥
Mulled wine is a comforting cocktail enjoyed throughout Europe during the colder months of the year. It’s synonymous with chilly strolls under twinkling lights, festive gatherings, and quiet evenings by the fire. It seems every country has its unique twist on this classic drink. Italy’s signature mulled wine is Vin Brulè.
This seasonal elixir warms the soul and sparks a spirit of celebration. Its roots can be traced to the northern regions of Italy where the winters are particularly crisp. Vin Brulè is a time-honored recipe that transforms already fabulous red wine into a fragrant, spiced beverage that has an uncanny ability to bring people together.
The preparation of Vin Brulè is a ritual in itself. Start by gently heating a dry red Italian wine like a Chianti, Barbera, Barolo, or Sangiovese. When it’s nice and warm, add a spice medley including cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and orange zest. When everything is married well and the air is filled with the comforting scents of the season, serve the Vin Brulè with a thin slice of orange, cinnamon stick, or star anise.
Tip ➡️ Vin Brulè is versatile, adapting to regional variations and personal preferences. Some may choose to add a touch of honey for sweetness, while others may opt for a splash of brandy to elevate the spirits.
Will you be embracing the heartwarming tradition of Vin Brulè this season? Let me know in the comments.

Dear Samantha: This is my first year in Italy with an ERV. I’m thinking ahead to next holiday season and I’m wondering if I can rent out a spare room in my house? How does that work?
Dear Todd: Hi Todd. First, I hope your first year of your new life in Italy was everything you hoped it would be!
Your question is interesting and to answer it I need to make a few assumptions. I will assume that you own your home and that you want to rent out a room to strangers to earn money. This, in essence, is Airbnb.
Yes, in theory you can Airbnb a room in your home, but depending on where you live there could be licenses, restrictions, and also taxes (tourist + income) that you have to consider.
The first thing to do is contact your local Anagrafe to ask about the Airbnb registration requirements for renting a room. Every comune is different and in some cases, you may need to get a special clearance that your home is large enough to accommodate the extra people. You will also need to ensure that the activity is allowed as some cities are restricting permits.
After you learn all the procedures required by your Comune, check on Airbnb to see competition and rates for shared space in your area. A market analysis can quickly show you if the potential income is worth the trouble 😉.
